Centre for Manuscript and Text Cultures (CMTC)

The Centre for Manuscript and Text Cultures (CMTC) is an academic hub for inter-disciplinary activities related to the study of pre-modern manuscript and epigraphic traditions from different cultures. The Centre has been established by The Queen’s College, Oxford, but is proactively engaged in collaborative activities involving scholars from other institutions around the world.

Announcing a new eCSL program that has been developed in conjunction with linguistics specialists at The Queen’s College, University of Oxford.

The Centre for Manuscript and Text Cultures (CMTC) is planning to issue a CMTC Journal approximately twice per year. The Journals are released in both paper-print and digital formats. From now on, the final five (5) pages of each issue of the CMTC Journal will be devoted to displays from the existing eCSL program supplemented by relevant features and illustrations from the CSL Compendium A Sanskrit Treasury (published by The Bodleian Library in 2019).

The CMTC Sanskrit displays will be posted in the digital eCSL section of this website whenever they become available. To see the display from issue Vol 2, No 2, click to view slideshow on this webpage.

This new Sanskrit learning platform is based on two sources of pre-existing material i.e. the eCSL collection and the CSL Compendium.

John P. Clay would have been delighted to see the CMTC presentation because the new template shows THREE versions of the text excerpted from the eCSL:

  1. in the English language (from the original CSL translation and as used for the eCSL program);
  2. in transliterated Sanskrit (the “facing-page display” from the relevant CSL and eCSL volume); and
  3. in the original Devanagari (Indian) script (as shown in the CSL Compendium — note: the CSL Compendium does not contain the transliterated format of the Sanskrit).

This new-style, “three-way” language display, with splendid accompanying illustrations, will be of great practical use to students who are learning to read Sanskrit.
